Gather around the table

Sleek, highly glossy tables have their purpose: you can check your teeth for spinach in them. But otherwise, give me a worn, gnarled old table any day.

I love tables that you aren't going to have a heart attack over if your two year old decides to play cars over the top of it. In fact, they are just adding to the character.

Or that you feel just as comfortable using as a craft table as you do serving dinner on it.

I love tables that wear their history with pride. You know that this table has served a family well over many years, and it shows every ding and dent.

Tables that you know are not just for show, but serve a purpose too. A place for homework, reading the paper, or rolling out some scones.

These are the sort of tables that your family and friends can relax at. They can chew the fat on these tables - in more ways than one.

I love strong, sturdy and solid tables, built to last.

Best wishes,

I am with you 100%!!
What is a table if it doesnt show some love and who wants to know they have a huge chunk of something hanging out of their choppers by looking in the table anyway...that is what silverware is for! =0)

Our dining table is made from recycled Zimbabwean teak, it was used as a Railway sleeper over 100yrs ago, when the British arrived in Africa. How I wish it could talk!

I have to agree with Romana Catherine. I always want to save every pic you post! And I also agree with you about the 'perfect shining finish' it just doesn't have character and well, too high maintenance for me. [I am very agreeable today!! haha] I have to confess.. I have 3 dining tables, all timber and already gave away 2 others which I sometimes miss! A slight obsession... ooops. Lovely inspiring post again! x Julie

What a fantastic roundup of tables! I love old farmhouse tables for all the reasons you've mentioned. I need to save some of these for my inspiration files. Thanks!

The best thing about rooms like these? Family, friends & food provide the color... the stage is set, ready for the players.

Just don't spill the strawberry mojito ;-)

I just LOVE every photo you chose for this post. I am so with you on the preference for a weathered and worn table.

I really love vintage wooden tables. They add so much charm to a kitchen. And like you said, any spills made just add more character to the table ;p.

Catherine, these are beautiful examples of timber, timeworn tables that look great in any setting. I have a knotted old hardwood table that seats 10 and I truly love it. I do craft at the table, the kids draw & create there, we read the papers, put our mugs of hot tea straight onto the table and it just keeps looking better and better as the years go by. What's not to love! Lee :)

All such beautiful tables - I couldn't pick a favourite if I tried. My table serves as everything from a homework station, to a mondo workroom, to a setting for a posh dinner party (the last one in my dreams anyway!) and seems to survive it all.

Great post. I love all of these tables and agree with what you have said. A good strong table that is not too precious.

What beautiful tables you have shared today. I love them all.

I agree with you a table needs to be used. Our old table is used as a sewing table, the kids painted on it and we craft and enjoy working around it. Also love to have family meals and a few dinner parties.

* Catherine, I find it so interesting that sooo many of us, no matter how blessed we have been, just LOVE the more simple things in life... like branches in a huge vase, etc.~~~ THAT always "STAYS" with me the longest after leaving a lovely post like this~~~ And LOVELY it IS!!!!!

Many thanks!

I agree with you on a multipurpose table. Who wants to fret over scratches and dents. Especially when you have a little boy that no doubt will use it as race track at some point!

I'm with you all the way here Catherine! A glass table wouldn't last a second in our house, got to go for the wood every time.

Hi Catherine, More eye candy! Loved the photos! In photo #2 there is a collection of the old stoneware jugs and bottles (2-tone: mustard on top and putty on the bottom) that I collect. If you ever see any of it, let me know and I will happily send money or paypal to cover the cost and shipping/handling. It's hard for me to find here!
