Showcasing shells

If you have read my blog before, you might know that I'm mad about shells. Love 'em! Just about every room in my house has at least one shell.

To me, they are a miracle of nature, pure perfection, and I look in wonder and awe at their shapes and colours, from the tiniest to the biggest.

I love seeing how others have put out their shell collections and today I've picked out my absolute favourite images.

The image above would have to be one of my favourite images. Ever. Full stop. I can look at this image over and over. I just love everything about it - from the humble painted white cupboard with those fabulous draw pulls. The wire basket on top. The glass bottles, the collection of cute little wicker baskets And then there's the shells and the coral. The look is artful, yet uncontrived. I just want to pick up this cupboard and place it in my house.

This next image, below is a little more formal, but so beautiful. I'm a book lover from way back, so I love the way they've mixed the books with the shells and coral and other tidbits.

Here's a closer look.

Here, below is another humble cupboard with all the aspects I love - books, shells, coral, antique glass bottles. So sweet.

Ooh look, can you see a pattern?

Uh, huh.
Now here's a display of simplicity - the beauty of the shells speak for themselves, and things always look good in threes.

How about these fantastic follised shells below? Simply stunning! This vignette is from the home of the incredibly talented Atlanta Bartlett, stylist and author of At Home With White and The Relaxed Home (I own both) and more. In fact it seems she has a new book coming out next month! For more pictures of Atlanta's home click here.

I hope these images make you as happy as they make me!
Best wishes,

I have a very similar cabinet as the one in the first photo (minus the beadboard and glass doors). Thank you for providing these very timely, inspiring photos. I now know what to do in my LR.

Gorgeous images. I have some shells in my office at work, to remind me of life outside those wretched walls. :)

P.S. I could not find the item I had planned to send with your magazines. I had seen small wooden letters at a shop (about 10cm high) and was going to send you a cursive "C" but she had sold out! I will ship the magazines next week and sorry I couldn't get your C. I know you love letters. I am starting a new job next week and just didn't have time to look at more shops but will send one if I ever find another! In the meantime, will send the mags and email when I get them off, next weekend at the latest. Slow me!

xoox

P.S. i am still looking at my Aussie magazines and don't have them all read yet.

Love the combination of nice shelves, books, and shells. I saw a fantastic piece of coral for sale at a local shop the other day and almost persuaded myself to buy it... maybe if we eat really cheaply over the weekend I might find myself back there again!

They are all so beautiful...I love shells too and there is a shop here in Double Bay that just has the most divine candlesticks with shells that I have been dying for...I also love all the shells my little girls collect on the beaches...not as glam, but just as magical.

Beautiful post as always catherine. How exciting is it, to find an image you just can't get enough of!

Just an aside - where did you have your white slip covers for your sofa made? My friend (also and adelaidian) has asked me to ask you (she's not quite sure how to orchestrate a comment in blog world so has asked me to ask you xx) ta bella x

Oh, lovely indeed!! I adore those shells and corrals, but my question: where on earth can we get these shells and corrals to display in our cupboards? I tried on the internet, but can-t find any.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and that you enjoy it!!

I love displaying shells.
I just bought a bunch of white coral (all different kinds) to display on the shelves at the shop.
It always amazes me that they are nature made pieces of artwork.
Happy weekend.

I am with you there Catherine ~ I love shells.
When we were in Fiji walking along the beach there were all these beautiful shells - I took some home with me. Probably would be a no no now!

Also when I was little my lovely old Grandmother used to take us to the beach and we would help her pick up shells and she would take them back and put them on jewellery boxes and use them for all sorts of craft work.

Enjoy your weekend
Hugs
Carolyn

What is it with shells I wonder? I personally find them so mystical...as if they hold a secret...I can't realy explain...sometimes there are no words to discribe how one feels and thinks ey? I'll try though: when I see a shell, it always fills my heart with joy, peace and love...brings out the child in me, makes me daydream of summer, holidays by the seashore, soft warm winds and the smell of salt water and warm sand under my feet. It's like in in a crystal clear bubble, floating on this amazing feel....oh dear, I'm getting carried away here....anyway, ADORE you blog!! I thank God that there a people like you who see the beauty of life and have a hunger to share that with someones else!! Have a wonderful day!!
