One big tick

I'm a list writer from way back. Shopping lists, lists of books to read, places to go, spring cleaning jobs...the list goes on! It keeps my head in order, and provides me with a sense of achievement when I tick something off.

Above is my list of 2009 house projects. And now, two months in to the year, I can finally cross off the first thing! Today I picked up removable covers which I had custom-made for the seating on my two couches. I'm not a sewer, so I left this to the professionals. And they turned so out well!

You see, I was the dumb bunny who bought creamy white couches with 'removable covers' only to find that the frame of the couch had a removable cover, but not the seating - each cushion has a label just inside by the zipper saying 'do not remove' and 'do not wash'. Great! Have you ever heard of a couch with a removable cover where you can't actually wash the seating covers? And to add insult to injury the removable cover on the frame had a 'do not wash, dry clean only' label - even though I had chosen a washable fabric specifically made for slip covers. So for the last 18 months, with the rough and tumble of normal life, my couches have been getting grottier and grottier.

I broke a couple of nails fitting the covers on, but hey, I can live with that! I'm curled up on one of my couches now, happy in the knowledge that when (not if - I'm a realist) the next splodge occurs, I can chuck the seat cover in the wash. I took the picture (above) tonight after I rushed home from work and fitted them on. Now my couches look as good as new.

Best wishes,

The slips looks great!! Congratulations of getting an item crossed off the list! That's such a great feeling. I'm a list writer, too! I have the same item of changing out the sliders for french doors on mine ... I hope you do yours first so I can watch and learn!
I love your blog!

Oh so exciting!!! Catherine- can you please email me in a month or so & let me know how they're holding up?? You know I love white but I went with a more natural-colord slipcover because I'd had a white sofa before & it didn't go well.

xoxo

it looks beautiful!!!!

Your covers look fantastic! Don't you love the satisfaction of crossing something off your list? I sometimes even add something to the list that I just finished, just so I can cross it off :).

Those covers look great! So neat and white! I have to change mine. They "used to be" white...
Have a wonderful weekend!

Your couch looks great. This is something I need to do eventhough I really would love to just buy a totally different couch. My husband has a habit of sleeping on it and you can only flip the cushions so much until the shape is lost forever. Also, love the new Germany store. Hope you have a great weekend, Heidi

Next couch I purchase, I am going to buy a spare couch cover for it, because my children spill things on the uncovered couch when the cover is still on the line drying.
At least this way I can remove the dirty one and put a new one on straight away.

They look great. The week after I wash my white slip covers I am like a maniac - don't sit down with dirty school clothes, don't eat on the sofas! Than I forget and they get dirty, but it never matters as they wash up so well. I haven't even had to resort to bleach yet! I'm sure you will enjoy yours, even if putting them on does break the odd nail!

Oh I so love the covers. I would like to do the same to mine as they are a green that doesn't go with the house we have been in for 5 years. I keep putting off getting a price as I hate to think how expensive they would be.
I am a great one for lists too! Always have been - I think I just like to see it all written down so I know where I am heading

Catherine - great job on the covers, they look fab. Even worth a broken nail! I'd love to know your uphosterer/seamstress (I'm pretty sure you're in Adelaide??), if you are willing to share? Slip covers are on my list too, and I need to start pricing etc etc.

Cheers
Romana :)

I do love you Catherine. Now I feel better that I am not the only mad list writer...lol!
Your couch covers look great. I have to say though, don't listen to everthing that is on a label. Our covers say you cant wash them...but I do and they are still fine 6 years on. I hope you get the rest of your list ticked off soon,
Ness xx

Well done Catherine - they are gorgeous! MOTH is the List Maker in this family, although he sets the bar too high most times - e.g. Melbourne FC to win Grand Final (last time was in 1964!!!), landscape garden this Sunday (all 1acre of it!) etc. etc.
My white slipcovers are 12 years old & still going strong even with all our boys - no regrets here.

How strange with the unwashable slipcovers? Isn't the whole point of slipcovers that you can wash them? The new ones are absolutely stunning though!
